The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has said Parliament’s goal to be a vibrant legislative body cannot be achieved without giving reverence to the media.
Making a presentation at a two-day Symposium and Media summit organized by the West Africa parliamentary Press Corps (WAPPC) on the topic ‘Building a sustainable and Independent Parliamentary Democracy-The role of the Media’, the Member of Parliament for Nadowli West emphasized that the media serves as the bridge between the Parliament and the public.
He stated that his loyalty to the media has always been strong as his focus on building well-grounded parliamentary democracy largely depends on the media.
“No parliamentary system can function without the media. The media serves as a bridge.” Hon. Alban Bagbin said during his presentation.
“The media serves as public interest and welfare and not tragic interest and welfare,” The MP advised Media on why they should be circumspect in all their reportage and getting the facts right.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the chairman of the two-day summit, Prof. Emmanuel Asante said for the citizens to be abreast with the parliamentary proceedings, it is necessary for the legislative body to partner the media to inform and educate the public on issues of concern.
“We’ve realized that parliament is the epicenter of democracy and good governance in the country,” Prof. Emmanuel Asante.
Delivering the Keynote address, the Honourable Minister of Information, Dr. Mustapha Hamid emphasized on the need for the media to correct certain abnormalities and change the status quo.
“We’ll advise that once the media is used to build and sustain democracy, let’s also use it for constructive purpose to help change the abnormalities in society.” Hon. Mustapha Hamid.
Other dignitaries present at the opening ceremony were, Hon. Nii Adjiri Blankson-Council of State Member, Mr. Albert Kan Dapaah-Ghana’s National Security Minister, Senator Ben Murray Bruce, Mr. John Azumah-ECOWAS Parliament Secretary General, Dr. Joyce Aryee, Hon. James Klutse Avedzi, Hon. Kwesi Ameyaw Kyeremeng, Linda Asante Adjei – GJA Vice President, Ms Kate Addo-Acting Director Public Affairs-Parliament and Kwasi Gyan Apenteng-Chairman, National Media Commission.
